How to play Five-Letter Guess

There’s a hidden five-letter English word. You have six guesses to find it, and every guess tells you a little more.

1. Type any five-letter word and press Enter. It has to be a real word in our word list.
2. Read the colours. A gold tile means that letter is in the word and in the right place. A red tile means the letter is in the word but in a different place. A dark tile means the letter isn’t in the word at all.
3. Use what you learn. Keep gold letters where they are, move red letters somewhere new, and avoid dark letters. The keyboard keeps track for you.
4. Find the word in six to win. If you run out of guesses, the word is shown.

Letters can appear more than once. If you guess a word with two Es and the answer has only one, just one of your Es lights up.

The daily word and practice

Everyone gets the same daily word, and it changes at midnight. Solve it to build your streak, then share your result as coloured squares without giving the word away. Want more? Practice mode gives you a fresh word whenever you like.

Quick tips for finding the word

• Open with common letters. Words with E, A, R, T, O, I and S, like STARE or RAISE, rule out lots of the alphabet in one go.
• Try a second word with five new letters if your first guess comes back mostly dark.
• Think about where letters usually go. Many words end in E, Y, T or S, and few begin with X or end in V.
• Remember repeats. When you’re stuck, the answer may have a double letter, like SPEED or LLAMA.
