How to play Letter Tiles

Letter Tiles is a crossword game for two. Each player has a rack of seven letter tiles, and you take turns building words that cross and join on the board.

  1. The first word covers the star in the middle of the board.
  2. Place tiles in one straight line, across or down, with no gaps. Every new word must join the tiles already on the board.
  3. Every word you make must be real, including any new words formed where your tiles touch others.
  4. Score the letters. Each tile shows its points. 2L and 3L squares double or triple a letter; 2W and 3W double or triple the whole word. Bonuses only count on the turn a tile is placed.
  5. Use all seven tiles in one turn for a 35-point bonus.
  6. Refill your rack after each turn. Instead of playing, you can Swap tiles with the bag or Pass.

The game ends when the bag is empty and one player uses their last tile, or after six turns in a row with no score. Points on tiles left in a rack are taken off, and the player who went out gains them.

Quick tips for higher scores

  • Put high-value letters on bonus squares. A Z on a 3L square is worth 30 points by itself.
  • Play across and down at once. Placing a tile where it makes two words scores both.
  • Keep a balanced rack. Aim for a mix of vowels and consonants. Swap if you’re stuck with seven consonants.
  • Learn the short words. Two-letter words like OX, AX and OF let you squeeze in big tiles.
