How to play Tile Match
Tile Match is a solitaire game played with a stack of 72 picture tiles, often called Mahjong solitaire. Your goal is to clear the whole stack by removing matching pairs.
- Find two matching tiles. Each picture appears four times, so there are two pairs of every kind.
- Both tiles must be free. A tile is free when no tile sits on top of it, even partly, and it has an empty space on its left or its right. Free tiles are lit up; blocked tiles are dimmed.
- Tap both tiles to remove them. Tap one, then its match. Tap a selected tile again to put it back.
- Clear the table to win. If there are no matching free pairs left, use Shuffle to mix the remaining tiles.
Every deal can be cleared. Stuck? Hint lights up a pair you can take, and Undo puts pairs back as far as you like.
Quick tips for clearing the table
- Work on the top layers early. Tiles on top block the most tiles underneath.
- Open up long rows from the ends. A long row only opens one tile at a time from each side.
- Look before you match. If three of a picture are free, choose the pair that frees up the most other tiles.
- Count pairs. The Pairs to take counter shows how many matches are open right now.

Is Tile Match the same as Mahjong solitaire?
Yes. It follows the same rules as the classic Mahjong solitaire games: remove free tiles in matching pairs until the stack is cleared. We use our own picture tiles rather than traditional Mahjong tiles.
Can every game be won?
Yes. Each deal is made by working backwards from an empty table, so there is always a way to clear it. You can still get stuck by taking pairs in the wrong order. Then use Undo or Shuffle.
What does Shuffle do?
It mixes up the tiles that are left, keeping their positions, so that the table can still be cleared.
Will my game be saved?
Yes. Your table and time are saved in your browser, so you can close the page and come back.
Is Tile Match free?
Yes. Play as many games as you like in your browser on any device. No download and no account needed.
