How to play Sliding Tiles

Sliding Tiles is the classic sliding puzzle, often called the 15 puzzle. Numbered tiles are mixed up in a square frame with one empty space, and you slide them around until they’re back in order.

  1. Slide a tile into the gap. Tap any tile next to the empty space and it slides in.
  2. Move several at once. Tap a tile further along the same row or column as the gap, and every tile between slides over together. That counts as one move per tile.
  3. Put them in order. Arrange the tiles from 1 at the top left, reading across each row, with the gap in the bottom right corner.

Choose 3×3 (8 tiles) for a quick game, 4×4 (the classic 15 tiles), or 5×5 (24 tiles) for a long challenge. Tiles in their correct place get a gold edge, so you can see your progress.

Quick tips for solving it

  • Solve the top row first, then the next. Once a row is done, you never need to touch it again.
  • Save the last two rows for the end, and solve them column by column from the left.
  • Place the last two tiles of a row together. Put the last tile below its spot, the one before it beside that, then rotate them in.
  • Don’t worry about moves at first. Learn the method, then work on speed.
