How to play Peg Solitaire

Peg Solitaire is one of the oldest puzzles in the world. You start with 32 pegs on a cross-shaped board of 33 holes, with only the centre hole empty.

  1. Jump a peg. Pick a peg and jump it over a peg right next to it, into an empty hole directly beyond. Jumps go left, right, up or down, never diagonally.
  2. The jumped peg is removed. Every jump takes one peg off the board.
  3. Keep jumping. If the peg you just moved can jump again, it stays selected so you can chain jumps.
  4. The game ends when no jump is possible. Leave just one peg to win, and finish in the centre hole for a perfect game.

Pegs that can jump are lit. Tap one to see where it can go. Undo takes back as many jumps as you like.

Quick tips for finishing with one peg

  • Don’t strand pegs in the corners. A peg alone in one of the four arms is very hard to rescue later.
  • Clear one arm at a time. Work methodically rather than jumping wherever you can.
  • Keep pegs together. A peg needs a neighbour to jump over, so scattered pegs are stuck pegs.
  • Save the centre for the end. Bring the last pegs back toward the middle.

Learn the moves that clear each arm of the board and finish in the centre.
