How to play Picture Logic

Picture Logic puzzles, also called nonograms or paint-by-numbers, hide a picture in a grid. The numbers beside each row and above each column tell you how to find it.

  1. Read the clues. Each number is a run of filled squares in that row or column, in order. A clue of 3 1 means a run of three filled squares, then at least one gap, then a single filled square.
  2. Fill the squares you’re sure of. Tap a square to fill it, or drag along a row or column to fill several.
  3. Cross out squares that must be empty. Switch to Cross out, or right-click, to mark them. Crosses are just notes for you.
  4. Finish the picture. When every row and column matches its clue, the puzzle is solved. Clues turn grey once their line is right.

Every puzzle here can be solved with logic alone, one line at a time. You never need to guess.

Quick tips for solving

  • Start with the big numbers. In a 10-square row, a clue of 8 means the middle 6 squares must be filled, wherever the run starts.
  • Add up the clues. If a row’s numbers plus one gap between each fill the whole row, the row is fully decided.
  • Work back and forth. Every square you fill or cross out in a row gives you new information for its column.
  • Use the edges. A filled square against the edge starts a run, so you know exactly how far it goes.

Picture Logic FAQ

What is a nonogram?

A nonogram is a logic puzzle where number clues for each row and column reveal a hidden picture. They’re also known as Picross, Griddlers and paint-by-numbers.

Do I ever need to guess?

No. Every puzzle here is checked when it’s made, so the clues lead to exactly one picture, and you can get there one line at a time.

What do the crosses do?

Nothing for the score. They’re notes to remind you which squares must stay empty, which makes the next steps easier to see.

Will my puzzle be saved?

Yes. Your grid and time are saved in your browser, so you can close the page and finish later.

Is Picture Logic free?

Yes. Play as many puzzles as you like in your browser on any device. No download and no account needed.
