How to play Pig

Pig is one of the simplest dice games there is, and one of the most tense. It’s all about knowing when to stop.

  1. Roll the die on your turn. Each number you roll is added to your total for the turn.
  2. Keep rolling, or hold. Hold to add this turn’s total to your score, and pass the die.
  3. Roll a 1 and you lose it all. Your turn total goes back to zero and the other player takes over.
  4. First to 100 wins.

Play against the computer at three levels, or with a friend on one device.

Quick tips for winning

  • Hold at around 20. It’s a classic rule of thumb: below 20, the next roll is worth the risk; above it, it usually isn’t.
  • Take more risks when you’re behind. If your opponent is close to 100, banking small amounts won’t catch them.
  • Close it out. When one good turn will reach 100, keep rolling until you get there.

Pig FAQ

Is Pig free?

Yes. Play the computer or a friend as often as you like, free in your browser. No download and no account needed.

What happens if I roll a 1?

You lose all the points from that turn, though your banked score is safe, and it’s the other player’s go.

When should I hold?

Holding at about 20 points a turn is a good simple strategy. Adjust it: push harder when you’re behind, and play safe when you’re ahead.

How good is the computer?

Easy holds early, Medium holds at around 20, and Hard changes its plan depending on the score.

Can I play with a friend?

Yes. Choose 2 players and pass the device each turn.
