How to play Ludo

Ludo is a classic race game for two to four players, based on the ancient Indian game Pachisi. Each player has four counters to get from their base, around the board and into the centre.

  1. Roll a 6 to start. A 6 brings one of your counters out of base onto your starting square.
  2. Move clockwise around the board by the number you roll. You choose which counter to move.
  3. Roll a 6 and roll again. But roll three 6s in a row and your turn ends.
  4. Capture! Land exactly on an opponent’s counter to send it back to their base. You also get another roll.
  5. Safe squares. Counters on starred squares can’t be captured.
  6. Go home. After a full lap, turn up your coloured path to the centre. You need the exact number to get each counter home, and getting one home earns another roll.
  7. First to get all four counters home wins.

Quick tips for winning

  • Bring counters out early. More counters on the board means more choices each roll.
  • Watch who’s behind you. A counter within six squares in front of an opponent is in danger.
  • Use the stars. Rest on a safe square when rivals are close.
  • Capture when you can. Sending a counter home that has nearly finished a lap is a huge swing.
