How to play Spades
Spades is a partnership trick-taking game. You and the computer player opposite you (North) team up against West and East.
- Bid. After the deal, each player bids how many tricks they expect to win. Your bid and your partner’s add up to your team’s target.
- Follow suit if you can. If you can’t, play any card, including a spade.
- Spades are trumps. The highest spade wins any trick it’s in; otherwise the highest card of the suit led wins.
- Spades must be broken. You can’t lead a spade until one has been played, unless you have only spades.
- Scoring. Make your team’s bid and score 10 points per trick bid, plus 1 for each extra trick (a bag). Miss it and lose 10 points per trick bid.
- Watch your bags. Every 10 bags costs your team 100 points.
- First team to 250 wins.
Quick tips for winning
- Count your sure tricks. Aces, guarded Kings and long, high spades are the safest bids.
- Don’t overtake your partner. If North is already winning a trick, play low.
- Short suits are valuable. With no cards in a suit, you can trump it with a spade.
- Don’t chase extra tricks. Once you’ve made your bid, extra tricks only add bags.
