How to play Crazy Eights
Crazy Eights is a fast, friendly card game and the classic that inspired many others. Be the first to get rid of all your cards.
- The deal. With two players, each gets 7 cards; with three or four, 5 each. One card is turned face up to start the discard pile.
- Match the top card by suit (a heart on a heart) or by number (a 9 on a 9).
- Eights are wild. Play an 8 on anything, then choose the suit the next player must follow.
- Can’t play? Draw. Take one card from the pile. If you can play it, you may; otherwise, pass.
- First to play their last card wins.
Quick tips for winning
- Save your eights. They get you out of trouble, so don’t waste them early.
- Steer the suit. When you play an 8, pick the suit you hold most of.
- Change number to change suit. Playing a 6 of clubs on a 6 of hearts switches the suit without using an 8.
- Watch who’s nearly out. When someone has one card left, try to move to a suit they probably can’t follow.
