How to play Solitaire
This is Klondike, the most popular version of Solitaire. The aim is to move all 52 cards onto the four foundations at the top right, one pile per suit, building each from Ace up to King.
- The deal. Cards are dealt into seven columns. The first column has one card, the second two, and so on up to seven. Only the top card of each column is face up. The rest of the deck sits face down at the top left.
- Build down in alternating colours. In the columns, put a card on one that’s one higher and the opposite colour: a red 6 on a black 7, a black Jack on a red Queen.
- Move runs together. You can move a whole run of face-up cards in order to another column. When you uncover a face-down card, it turns over.
- Only Kings go into empty columns. An empty column can be filled by a King, or by a run that starts with a King.
- Draw when you’re stuck. Tap the deck to turn over cards. When the deck runs out, tap it again to turn the pile back over and go through it again, as many times as you like.
- Win by getting all four suits up to their Kings.
Tap a card to send it to the best place automatically, or drag it where you want it. Made a mistake? Undo as many moves as you like. Once every card is face up and the deck is empty, a Finish button plays the rest of the cards up for you.
Draw 1 or Draw 3?
Draw 1 turns over one card at a time, so every card in the deck is always reachable. It wins far more often and makes a good relaxed game. Draw 3 is the classic, harder version: cards come three at a time and only the top one is playable, so some cards stay buried until the next pass. Switching between them starts a new game.
Quick tips for winning more games
- Turn over face-down cards first. Every hidden card you reveal gives you new options. Work on the columns with the most face-down cards.
- Play Aces and Twos straight away. They’re never useful anywhere else.
- Don’t empty a column without a King to put there. An empty column you can’t fill is wasted.
- Don’t rush cards to the foundations. A 5 or 6 left in the columns can still hold a 4 or 5 of the other colour you need to move.
