Reversi

Your turn

Tap a square with a gold dot. Every dark disc caught in a line between your discs flips to gold.

How to play Reversi

Reversi is played on an 8×8 board with discs that are a different colour on each side. The game starts with four discs in the centre, two of each colour. You play gold and move first.

  1. Place a disc so that one or more of the computer’s discs are trapped in a straight line between your new disc and another gold disc. Lines can run across, up and down, or diagonally.
  2. Flip the trapped discs. Every computer disc caught in a line flips to gold, in every direction at once.
  3. Every move must flip something. The squares where you can play are marked with a gold dot.
  4. No move? You pass. If you can’t flip anything, your turn is skipped and the computer plays again.
  5. The game ends when neither side can move, usually when the board is full. Whoever has more discs wins.

Quick tips to beat the computer

  • Grab the corners. A disc in a corner can never be flipped, and it anchors the edges next to it.
  • Avoid the squares next to the corners, especially the diagonal ones, early in the game. Playing there often hands the corner to your opponent.
  • Don’t chase discs early. Having fewer discs in the opening usually means more choices later. The disc count only matters at the very end.
  • Limit the computer’s moves. The best move is often the one that leaves your opponent with the fewest good replies.

Reversi FAQ

Is this Reversi game free?

Yes. Play as many games as you like in your browser on a phone, tablet or computer. There’s no download and no account needed.

What happens if I can’t make a move?

Your turn is skipped and the computer moves again. You get your turn back as soon as you have a move that flips at least one disc.

Can a game of Reversi end in a draw?

Yes. If both sides finish with the same number of discs, the game is a draw.

Why are corners so important in Reversi?

A disc can only be flipped if it can be trapped between two enemy discs. Nothing can sit on the far side of a corner, so a corner disc is safe for the rest of the game, and the discs you build out from it along the edges often become safe too.

Which level should I start on?

Easy is good for learning how flipping works. Medium plays sensibly and takes corners when it can. Hard thinks several moves ahead and is a real test of strategy.
