How to play Golf Solitaire

Golf is a quick solitaire game scored like the sport: the fewer cards you have left at the end, the better your round.

  1. The deal. 35 cards are dealt face up into seven columns of five. One card starts the waste pile and the rest form the deck.
  2. Play one up or one down. Move the bottom card of any column to the waste pile if it’s one rank higher or lower than the top waste card.
  3. Nothing goes on a King. When a King is on the waste pile, you have to draw from the deck.
  4. Aces and Kings don’t connect. Only a 2 can go on an Ace.
  5. Draw when stuck. Tap the deck to turn over a new waste card.
  6. Your score is the number of cards left in the columns when the deck is empty and no card fits. Clear every column for a perfect 0.

Quick tips for a lower score

  • Look for the longest run. Before playing, see which choice lets you play the most cards in a row.
  • Save cards that bridge. If a column holds a 5 and a 7, keep one free to link chains later.
  • Watch out for Kings. A King on the waste stops everything, so play other cards first when you can.

Golf Solitaire FAQ

Is Golf Solitaire free?

Yes. Play as many rounds as you like in your browser on any device. No download and no account needed.

Why can’t I play on a King?

In Golf, nothing can go on a King, so a King on the waste pile means you must draw. It’s what makes the game tricky.

How is the score worked out?

Your score is the number of cards left in the columns at the end. Lower is better, and 0 means you cleared everything.

Do Aces and Kings connect?

No. Only a 2 can go on an Ace, and nothing can go on a King.

Is there an undo?

Yes. Undo takes back as many moves as you like.
