How to play Reversi: the rules

Reversi (Othello) in one minute: place a disc to trap your opponent’s discs in a line and flip them to your colour. Learn by playing. How Reversi works · lesson 1 of 3.

The lesson in words

Reversi, also sold as Othello, is played on an 8×8 board. You have the gold discs and your opponent has black. The game starts with two of each in the middle, and gold moves first.

On your turn you place one disc so that it traps a line of your opponent’s discs between it and another of your discs. Every trapped disc flips to your colour.

Watch gold trap one black disc.

A move is only allowed if it flips at least one disc. Here, gold has exactly four allowed moves.

Try it: Tap every square where gold can play.

Your turn for real. The dots show where you can play.

Try it: Make any move and watch the flip.

Trap a line, flip it. Next: flipping lots of discs at once.
