Solitaire strategy: when to play cards up

Should every card go up to the foundations straight away? In Solitaire, Aces and 2s always should, but higher cards are sometimes needed in the columns. Winning ideas · lesson 3 of 4.

The lesson in words

Aces and 2s should always go up straight away: nothing can be built on them in the columns.

Higher cards are different. A black 6 on the foundation can no longer hold a red 5 in the columns. If the red 5s are still buried, you might need that 6 below.

Aces and 2s go up at once; higher cards when they aren’t needed below. Next: using the deck well.

Questions

You can play the 6 of spades up, but both red 5s are still face down. What’s safest?

Keep it below until the red 5s are free or the 6 is in the way. A card on the foundation can’t hold anything in the columns.
