Sudoku technique: pointing pairs
Pointing pairs in Sudoku: when a digit’s candidates in a box all sit on one row or column, it can be crossed out of the rest of that line. Solving techniques · lesson 6 of 7.
The lesson in words
In the middle-right box, the digit 3 can only go in the two marked cells, and both are on row 5.
Whichever one it is, the box’s 3 is on row 5. So no other cell on row 5 can be 3. The pair points along the row.
The outlined cell on row 5 has candidates 3 and 8.
Try it: Use the pointing pair to fill the outlined cell.
Box first, then the line it points along. Next: putting it all together.
