Go tactics: snapback

Snapback in Go: sacrifice one stone so that white’s capturing group is left with a single liberty, then take the whole group back. Life, death and tactics · lesson 4 of 5.

The lesson in words

Sometimes the best move is to put a stone where it will be captured. If the stones that capture it are left with just one liberty, you take them all back. That’s a snapback.

White’s group in the corner has two liberties.

Try it: Throw in a stone, let white take it, then capture the group.

Give one, take five. Next: where to play first on a 9×9 board.
