Capturing in Go: taking the last liberty
In Go you capture a stone or group by filling its last liberty. Practise captures in the middle, on the edge and of a whole group. How Go works · lesson 3 of 5.
The lesson in words
When a stone or group has no liberties left, it’s captured and taken off the board. Captures count towards your score.
This white stone has one liberty left.
Try it: Capture the white stone.
On the edge, it takes fewer stones.
Try it: Capture the white stone on the edge.
A whole group is captured when the group runs out of liberties, all at once.
Try it: Capture both white stones with one move.
Fill the last liberty and the stones come off. Next: atari, when a group is down to one.
