The lesson in words
When your king is attacked it is in check, and you must get out of check straight away.
There are only three ways: move the king, block the attack, or capture the attacker.
Way one: move the king to a safe square.
Try it: Get your king out of check.
Way two: block by putting a piece between the attacker and your king.
Try it: Block the check with your bishop.
Way three: capture the piece giving check. Often the best way of all.
Try it: Capture the checking rook.
Move, block or capture: remember those three. Next: checkmate.
